HFCA July 2020 Memo to ParentsAloha to our Holy Family Ohana,

We hope this memo finds you and your ohana well. This last week has presented us with unsettling data in a rising surge of positive COVID-19 cases. During such times, it is vital to remain focused on desired outcomes and goals. We want to reassure you that Holy Family Catholic Academy and Early Learning Center remain committed to providing your child(ren) the formation and education in the Catholic faith, gospel values, traditions, and the love and knowledge of the person of Jesus Christ. Your child’s development as a whole person: spiritually, intellectually, personally, socially, and physically, is the focus of Catholic education at HFCA and ELC. We are committed to delivering this learning journey no matter what vehicle, in-person, or virtual, we use.

Due to the recent spike in virus cases, HFCA (grades K - 8) will be postponing our On-Campus, In-Person and Virtual Model start day, from Wednesday, August 5 to Monday, August 17. We feel that this change is in the best interest of our students and staff members. We must consider what is happening in our surrounding communities and make decisions, at times, difficult ones, that will protect and benefit all involved.
Our ELC program began On-Campus, In-Person instruction today, and will continue with this learning model. Our preschool program has been modified to support small groups of students and remains in full compliance with the State of Hawaii guidelines for childcare and preschool programs.
HFCA learned last week that our order for the middle school iPads (grades 5-8) has been delayed and is expected to ship on August 21. We received a small shipment of iPads and are awaiting the arrival of the remainder of our order.  Although this is disappointing, we are making alternate plans to accommodate our middle school students until their iPads arrive.  We will issue all grade 5-8 iPads to students as soon as they are received.
We will be using the model explained below as we move forward.
Our education program for all K-8th grade students will now begin on Monday, August 10. ALL students (In-Person and Virtual) will meet with their homeroom teachers to start the school year remotely while at home. You may be asking, what does this entail?
On Wednesday, August 5th, your child(ren)’s homeroom teacher(s) will email you letting you know their updated expectations, given our revised start plans for the school year.
Students will meet online daily for about two hours with their homeroom teacher using Google Meets, from Monday, August 10 - Friday, August 14.

- Teachers will be sending the Google Meet invite to parents. We will be using Google Meets instead of Zoom to teleconference with our students.

- Teachers will email the learning schedule for the week to all parents.
- All grade K-4 students will receive a Google Account, which will provide access to their online curriculum.  -Students in grades K-4 will learn to use their school-issued iPads to participate in their Google Meets.  Students in grades 5-8 will be able to access their Google Meets via their personal devices.
- During virtual classroom time, teachers will introduce the learning programs and online curriculum to the students.

The distribution of iPads for grades K-4 will occur on Friday, August 7.

- Homeroom teachers will be sending parents a link to schedule a time to come to their classroom to receive an iPad with charger and protective case, planner book, and a handout with login/password information for the digital curriculum.

- The student, along with their parent(s), will meet their homeroom teacher and visit their homeroom classroom during their appointment time.

- We ask that all parents and students come to their appointments wearing face masks.

We will be emailing a survey to our students’ parents in grades 5-8, inquiring if their child(ren) in these grade levels have access to a device for the week of August 10-14.

We are looking forward to welcoming our In-Person model students to our school campus, and our virtual students online, on Monday, August 17. Please do not hesitate to contact me at cakiu@hfcahawaii.org or your child’s homeroom teacher if you have any questions.
God Bless,
Celeste Akiu
Principal, Holy Family Catholic Academy
